Keyless Entry For Your Jaguar XK

Jaguar has not included this desirable feature of being able control the convertible roof operation using the current key fob. This would be a great feature, since it could reduce the wind buffeting while driving the XK.

If your Jaguar XF key fob is not working anymore or has a range that has decreased it's time to replace the battery. Here is how to do it.

Keyless Entry System

Consider upgrading to keyless entry on your Jaguar XE if you've ever spent some time digging in your purse or pockets to find your keys, before rushing to the door. This feature offers a level of security and convenience that many people are drawn to. Simply walk up to your XE with the Jaguar key fob in your hand and it will be able to tell that you're in the vicinity. When the key fob is close proximity to your vehicle you can open it by grabbing a door handle or pressing a luggage compartment release button.

Your Jaguar key fob is fitted with an electronic chip which allows it to communicate directly with the Jaguar system. It can unlock doors as well as operate windows and sunroofs and even remotely start your engine. The key fob has rubber seals that protect it from water damage. However, it is essential to remove it from the holder in order to clean any electronic components exposed with isopropyl or electronic cleaner and a paper towel. Submerging your key fob in salty or soapy water can harm the circuitry and may require the replacement.

The Jaguar XK keyfob comes with an option to "double-lock" your vehicle. This provides additional security against theft. However, your Jaguar key fob might not function for a variety of reasons, such as a dead battery in the key fob, or an unpaired key that requires changing the program by the dealer.

Transponder Chip Keys

Jaguar introduced a new key model for its cars in 1998, that required special equipment to program. These keys are equipped with a transponder, which disables the vehicle's immobiliser. The keys need to be added to Jaguar's database which is usually handled by a locksmith or dealer. Tibbe Keys

Some Jaguars from the 1990s were equipped with keys that were called a Tibbe key. They require special equipment because they have flat cuts with precise angles on four different sides. They are not interchangeable with regular keys, and most locksmiths do not have the equipment needed to cut them. This could lead to lengthy waiting times for owners that require replacement keys. Dealerships are also able to cut them but charge a considerable amount.

The lock itself is fairly interesting, as it consists of 6 or 8 rotating discs that must be aligned properly for the sidebar to fall into position and allow access to the trunk or door lock. This is accomplished by using a specific tool that appears like a drill, and it can be a bit challenging. This tool is only to be used for the DOOR lock and not the ignition or trunk lock.

There are only a handful of locksmiths that are experts in Tibbe keys and their costs are based on many factors, such as time and effort, the cost of consumables, equipment and so on. The adapter kit designed specifically to work on these types of keys can run several hundred dollars, and every one must be set up manually (or a skilled programmer may do it on an electronic key machine) for each new key that is created.

Key Fob Battery Replacement

It's essential to have an extra battery in your inventory. The most effective way to determine it's time for a replacement is when the key fob no more activates or responds consistently to push buttons. Your Message Center may also alert you that your battery is low.

It's easy to replace the battery in your Jaguar keyfob at your garage. It's only a few minutes. The first step is opening the fob's cover open using a flat head screwdriver or your fingernail. There are usually 2 seams where the fob's halves meet, and you can gently pull them apart to expose the blade of emergency key.

Once the fob is open, you can move the key blade back to remove the cover to reveal the old battery. It will look like a small coin with the battery's size and a plus and minus signs embossed on one side. Make sure to insert another battery of identical to the one you have and align it correctly.

Be sure to handle your new battery only from the sides. Touching it from the bottom or top can result in moisture transfer and reduce the life of the battery. Reassemble the fob and test the buttons on the remote to determine whether they are working again. If not, call your local Jaguar Annapolis service pros for assistance.
